The Big Stretch: A Franchise Fable

Leo sat at a corner table at Pretty Bird, staring with intensity at a fifty-page document until the words started to look like abstract art. Was this all really necessary in order to open a yoga studio?

“Just sign the thing so we can be neighbors!” Jeff said as he slid a fresh oat milk latte onto the table. There had been a vacancy next to the Pretty Bird cafe for almost a year. The Yoga Bar would be a perfect feeder for Jeff’s business.

Leo grasped his pen like a sword and exhaled. He had skimmed a Legalese-English dictionary. Could a lawyer really do any better? Aren’t those guys overpriced and intimidatingly attractive? Besides, this was a small purchase—just his life savings. Why complicate things with an expert?

He took a deep breath, centered his chakras, and lowered the pen to the signature line.

“You’re gonna be a Glendale mogul,” Jeff said, and clapped Leo on the back.

“STOP!” came the cry from behind them. “Stop the madness!”

A woman appeared out of thin air, upsetting Jeff’s latte in its saucer. She wasn’t wearing a cape—thankfully—but she was sporting a sharp, chocolate-brown blazer and a hairstyle that suggested she’d just survived a high-speed chase in a convertible.

Leo watched her try to extract a stray croissant crumb from her lapel—collateral damage from her sudden entry.

“Lawna?” Jeff grinned, wiping the counter. “Back for more caffeine? Or are you here to save Leo from himself like you saved me and my mural?”

“Both! But mostly the saving,” Lawna chirped, her eyes darting across Leo’s paperwork like a frantic pinball. “Leo, honey. We aren’t signing this. Not today. Not with that hand, anyway. My goodness, is this a franchise agreement or a ransom note?”

“I read it!” Leo protested, clutching his pen. “Or at least the headings. The fees seem standard for—”

“For a heist, maybe!” Lawna interrupted. She flipped through the pages at lightspeed while simultaneously checking her watch and adjusting her blazer. “Did you see the ‘Mandatory Ambient Scenting’ surcharge? Or the ‘Technological Infrastructure Assessment’ fee? Leo, you’re looking at the big numbers, but these operational fees are like termites. They’ll eat your profit until there’s no pie left for you at the end of the day. And I really like pie, Leo. You should too.”

“I’m not adding pie to the menu, Lawna!” Jeff said. “Stop asking!”

Lawna ignored him and leaned in. “You want to be flexible. You’re a yoga guy, I get it. But this contract? It’s as stiff as a board. You need an attorney to review this.”

“I just wanted to save some money on the startup costs,” Leo admitted, looking at Jeff. Jeff just shook his head—he’d learned that “saving money” on legal fees usually ends up costing a fortune later.

“Saving a dime to lose a dollar is bad math, Leo. Also, it’s terrible for your alignment,” Lawna added, pointing a finger at him. “You need the pros. Call Full Circle Business Law. They’re the masters of the ‘Fine Print Pivot.’ They’ll make sure you actually keep the money you earn here in Glendale.”

Before Leo could offer her a chair, Lawna was already gathering her things, her brown blazer disappearing toward the exit as she muttered something about unconstitutional parking meters.

Leo looked at the pen, then at the daunting stack of paper. He looked at Jeff, who just shrugged and pointed at the phone. His dream of The Yoga Bar was still alive—it just needed a little more warrior pose and a lot less blindly signing away the pie.
